At just after 1.30pm on Saturday, May 2, our riders turned the corner into Frogmore Road, arriving at Fratton Park after 300 miles and three-and-half days in the saddle to cheers from a crowd of well wishers.
You can see a video of the team being led in by Neil Hardcastle at The News’s website here, which also has a link to a piece on the ride that was published in Monday’s paper. Our support team member, Emma, is a columnist for the paper and here‘s what she said about the ride.
At half time during Pompey’s final game of the season against York City FC the whole team were invited to sit in the home dugout for pictures before being presented to the crowd to more cheers. It was such an experience, hearing those people and knowing that they all knew what we’d done.
Luckily for us the fun wasn’t over with the bike ride, and we would like to thank Steve Hudson and all at the Shepherd’s Crook pub for having us there for our official welcome back party. We won’t be adding any pictures from the night on here (for obvious reasons!), apart from this one, of our fantastic cake made by Sarah Merrix:
But not only did we all make it back to Portsmouth in one piece, and survive the party on Sunday, but on Monday we also reached our £32,000 fundraising total!
We still have some money coming in, so the total will keep rising for a few days, and we can’t thank everyone enough for all their help in getting us to this magic figure.
We would also like to give a special mention to The News and Express FM for all their support before, during and after the ride; Sarah Gomme at Meridian; Dave at York Press, BBC Radio Northampton; Harborough FM; Newark Advertiser; Basingstoke Gazette and all the other websites and news outlets that have covered our trip and helped us reach our total.
Thanks too to Portsmouth Football Club and York City Football Club for all your support — especially to York for letting a bunch of strange people in Lycra invade their pitch early one April Wednesday morning.
We will update this blog as we get to our final fundraising total but for now, all we want to say, is THANK YOU.
